This syllabus walk-through for Database Management Systems (BCS403) is original VTUHub writing. Credits on this card: 3. Programme: CSE. Term: 4th Semester. Scheme: 2022.
We do not host the official scheme PDF. Download that from vtu.ac.in and match the subject code on your admission ticket before you trust any module title on this page.
The 2022 core for DBMS is commonly taught as 5 modules: Unit 1 Introduction and ER model; Unit 2 Relational model and SQL; Unit 3 Normalisation; Unit 4 Transactions and concurrency; Unit 5 Storage and indexing.
CIE work for a theory paper is usually internals plus assignments; a lab companion, if any, is marked separately. DBMS lists a lab component on VTUHub — treat the lab record as its own CIE bucket.
Elective baskets and college-specific experiments do not always appear in a generic CSE list. If the code on your ticket is not BCS403, you are on the wrong page.
- Unit 1 — Introduction and ER model: Data models, schemas, ER diagrams, keys, constraints.
- Unit 2 — Relational model and SQL: Relational algebra, DDL/DML, joins, nested queries, views.
- Unit 3 — Normalisation: FD, 1NF–BCNF, lossless join, dependency preservation.
- Unit 4 — Transactions and concurrency: ACID, schedules, locking, timestamps, recovery outline.
- Unit 5 — Storage and indexing: File organisation, B+ trees, hashing, query processing idea.
