How to calculate VTU CGPA

Quick answer Credit-weighted CGPA across semesters, what to do with arrears, and why WhatsApp percentage conversions are unofficial.
CGPA is not the average of SGPAs
CGPA = Σ (Si × Ci) / Σ Ci, where Si is the SGPA of semester i and Ci is the credit total of that semester. A 22-credit semester pulls more than an 18-credit one with the same SGPA.
Arrears
Until you clear a failed paper, those credits sit in the semester they were registered. After you pass, the new grade typically replaces the F in later CGPA computations — confirm the circular for your batch, because makeup and backlog rules have moved.
Percentage conversions
A commonly cited informal rule is percentage ≈ (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. VTU has not published a single conversion that every circular uses. Treat it as a planning figure. The transcript is the document that counts.
