Understanding VTU grading

Updated 18 August 2026 7 min read

Quick answer Letter grades, CIE versus SEE, 50/50 versus 40/60, and the 40% pass line that students mix up across schemes.

Two numbers, one letter

CIE is college internal assessment. SEE is the university semester-end paper. They add to 100, then the total maps to a letter. The split of that 100 depends on the scheme printed on your admission ticket.

50+50 versus 40+60

Most 2022-scheme theory papers use 50 CIE + 50 SEE. Many 2018-scheme papers used 40 + 60. Mixing those splits is the usual way students mis-grade themselves.

Pass rules

A common rule is 40% overall for a P. Some circulars also require a SEE minimum. A high CIE does not always save a collapsed SEE. Read the grading circular, not a WhatsApp forward.
